In this paper, a comparison between single core and modular transformer solutions is made. Basic dimensional relations between volumes, areas and lengths are used to obtain mathematical expression of the power losses and temperature rise of the modular solution. Two design methodologies are tested: modular transformers with equivalent magnetizing inductance to the single core solution and minimum loss optimized modular transformer. The analytical expressions obtained are validated using a numeric transformer design algorithm. Other potential advantages attainable with the use of modular transformer configurations, such as the reduction in high frequency losses and improvement in cooling capabilities are further discussed.
