Different modelling approaches have been analysed to investigate the dynamic fracture initiation toughness of two metallic alloys typically employed as plate armour in defence applications. These have been mechanically characterised at varying loading rates and temperatures. An extensive experimental campaign that comprises quasi-static, intermediate and high strain rate, and impulsive loadings on single edge notch bending standard specimens has been carried out to determine the dynamic fracture initiation toughness. Ductile fracture has been modelled with a bifurcation-enriched porous plasticity that includes a heuristic extension for anisotropy, whereas a standalone module with an analytical approach has been used in the case of the quasi-brittle fracture to compute the stress intensity factor. The predictive capabilities of such approaches have been analysed and discussed always from the fracture initiation point of view. [-]
